Heavy rain, snowfall take toll on normal life

Brief to heavy rains scattered throughout the country since Saturday afternoon have adversely affected normal life on Sunday. Cold weather compounded by snowfall in Himalayan districts and rains in Tarai districts will continue until Tuesday afternoon, according to weather forecasts. The seasonal weather change that brought rains and snowfall in different parts of the country has improved in West Nepal since Sunday afternoon and is likely to improve in some parts of Central and Eastern Nepal from Monday afternoon, said Shanti Kandel, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD).Jumla in the Mid-western region recorded the highest rainfall, measuring 22.1 millimeters, followed by Lumle, Pokhara, Bhairahawa, Dang, Kathmandu, Nepalgunj and Jiri at 21.7, 19.8, 16.6, 13, 12.3 6.9 and 4.8 millimeters respectively.
Stations in Dhangadhi, Dipayal, Birendranagar, Simara and Okhaldhunga recorded rainfall in the past 24 hours. According to Rukum District Police Office, snowfall was experienced in 16 VDCs including Taksera, Maikot, Sisne, Jang, Hukam, Rangsi, Kol and Morabang since Friday and Saturday, confining locals to their houses. Upper Rukum witnessed snowfalls up to a meter, police said. Jag Bahadur BK of Taksera-3 said that some children and elderly are suffering from fever and pneumonia while local schools remain closed indefinitely. Mahendra Buda, chairman of Himal Transport Entrepreneur Committee, said that traffic movements on Rukumkot-Mahat and Musikot-Taksara roads have been disrupted due to snowfall. Another report from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project said that snow up to a foot deep blanketted the area surrounding Jomsom in Myagdi. Regular flights could not operate from Lukla airport in Solukhumbhu on Sunday due to bad weather, airlines officials said. VDCs including Namche and Khumjung, likewise, witnessed a feet of snow. Schools in VDCs including Patle, Jantarkhani, Rawadolu, Bhusinga and Khijiphalete in Okhaldhunga were affected on Sunday due to snowfall and rains in highlands. Flights to and from the district have been disrupted for the past three days due to bad weather. Traffic movements in the district came to a halt on Saturday due to snowfall, locals said.
